Formed by Audrey Corbett, the choir’s first performance was of Handel’s Messiah which took place in Galway in December 1983; a work repeated many times by the choir since that night, most recently in December 2013 when the singers celebrated their 30th anniversary by singing this glorious work in the wonderful setting of Galway Cathedral.
Over thirty years of music making has given singers and audiences in Galway an opportunity to experience the great joy of choral music. The choir has performed a huge repertoire-Oratorios, Masses, Requiems, Glorias, Magnificats. All of these ranging from the 16th century to present day compositions.
In 2004 GBS sang a concert called From Broadway to Ireland in which they performed music from The Great Musicals.
In 2011 their summer concert was named “Baroques Lite”, and in 2012 A Taste of Summer –these two concerts featured the lighter side of the choral repertoire.
As a mark of its excellence, the choir for 25 years has been invited to sing annually with the RTE concert orchestra under conductors Proinnsías Ó Duinn, David Brophy, Fergus Sheil, John Kavanagh, Owain Arwel Hughes, Karl Jenkins (Armed Man and the Irish premiere of his Stabat Mater), John Wilson (Gilbert & Sullivan Extravaganza) and English conductor, Richard Balcombe(Ultimate Choral Classics).
Galway Baroque Singers have been very successful in competition winning numerous awards and prizes including 3 times the Premier National Award and 3rd place in the International competition in the Cork International Choral Festival. They received major awards in Limerick and Sligo and in 1998 were nominated as Choir of the Year in Navan before going to take part in the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, 1999.
2001 saw the release of their CD, De Anima, a recording renowned for its beauty of sound and sensitivity.
In 2003 GBS had the honour of singing at the conferring ceremony of Nelson Mandela at NUI Galway.
The choir has developed a special relationship with the RTE ConTempo string quartet whom they met in 2003 on ConTempo’s arrival in Galway and have performed on many occasions with them –Mozart-Handel-Pergolesi. They look forward to future concerts with this extraordinarily gifted quartet.
The highly renowned independent film maker Bob Quinn immortalized the choir in his last film, Vox Humana-notes for a small opera (2008) which featured the singing of the choir in an exquisite blend of narrative and music. Written and directed by him whose previous films express a great anger at the injustices in the world, Bob Quinn has declared this work to be motivated by love, the serenity of the choir’s “heavenly sound” contrasting with the tragedy and lack of compassion in our society.
The choir enjoys collaborating with other choral groups, local and visiting choirs. In 2014 they sang Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Our Lady’s Choral Society, conductor Proinnsías Ó Duinn. The two choirs joined forces again in 2015 for performances of Puccini Messa di Gloria and Mozart Mass in C minor.
In 2016 Galway Baroque Singers embarked on a unique project with the Dun Laoghaire Choral Society called Choral Fusion in order to sing a series of concerts for double choir. These performances will take place in both Dublin and Galway.
None of this could have been achieved without the musicianship and dedication of our director, Audrey Corbett, who continues to challenge us with music many of us would never otherwise have sung.
GBS Choir 1983 and 2016
Audrey Corbett, born in Dublin, was first known as an accomplished child pianist competing successfully in piano competitions in Ireland and the UK. During her years at University College Dublin she formed a madrigal group, St Stephen’s Singers, which rapidly rose to fame as they won the premier award for Irish choirs at the Cork International Choral Festival in two consecutive years. They then tied with Hungary for 3rd place in the BBC radio competition, ”Let the Peoples Sing”, a unique accomplishment for such a young choir.
Shortly after she came to Galway, she became involved with choral music there. Galway Baroque Singers was the result of a happy development of gentle beginnings. In addition to GBS, she has also founded and directed the Galway Boys' Choir and the female Corrib Singers. For many years she directed Súnus, formally Galway Baroque Chamber Choir, which in 2003 won the Choir of the festival award in Cork.
Audrey has been nationally recognised for her outstanding contribution to choral music. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Concert Hall for five years and is a recipient of a Galway County Arts award. In November 2008 she was awarded an Honorary Master’s Degree by NUIG in recognition of her services to choral music.
Galway Baroque Singers are delighted to be teaming up with the Dun Laoghaire Choral Society under conductor David Brophy for an exciting and ambitious new project.
Choral Fusion is an unprecedented Double Choir Series which unites these two fine ensembles from opposite sides of the country. Each concert will be performed in Dublin and in Galway. It's a massive undertaking which will feature the most exhilarating and challenging double choir repertoire. The choirs will be joined by the Fishamble Sinfonia and a host of wonderful up and coming soloists.
After the magnificant choruses of Handel's Solomon and the beauty of Lully and Purcell this time the choirs turn to the music of Vivaldi.
Vivaldi: Beatus Vir RV597, Kyrie in G minor RV587, Lauda Jerusalem RV609, Dixit Dominus RV594.

Galway Baroque Singers hold auditions at various stages in the year, usually at the start of each term. These are advertised in local newspapers and also on our Facebook page. If you would like to set up an audition send us an email or use our Facebook page to contact us.
1. How do I arrange an audition?
Email us or contact us through our facebook page to enquire about auditions. An audition date will be arranged for you as soon as possible
2. How long does an audition take?
Auditions take approximately 15 minutes
3. Who will be at the audition?
Our conductor and one other choir member will be in the audition room
4. How do I prepare for an audition?
Choose a song that you can sing for the audition
5. What else will I have to do in the audition
You will be asked some ear tests (sing back notes that are played)and rhythm tests(clap a rhythm after it has been played). You will also be asked to sing some scales.
6. I am not very good at sight reading. Can I still audition?
Yes! Some choir members are excellent at sight reading but there are people in the choir who are not sight reading experts. There are many ways of learning the notes - online resources, line tapes, record your line on your phone at the rehearsal. You will find that your sight reading will improve with practice.
7. Do I need to have a loud voice?
No. You need to be able to sing in tune and have a voice that blends with the choir
8. If I pass my audition, when does the choir rehearse?
We rehearse every Wednesday from 8pm-10.30pm. Coming up to concerts we may have extra rehearsals on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
9. If I have any more questions can I contact you?
Yes you can! Drop us an email and we will be delighted to answer any other questions you might have.
